Japan’s four major mobile network operators have agreed on a collaborative framework to ensure the swift restoration of communication networks during large-scale disasters. NTT Group, KDDI Corporation, SoftBank Corp., and Rakuten Mobile announced they would share essential network assets to respond effectively in emergencies.
The agreement, which officially began on December 1, 2024, aims to enhance coordination among the carriers during national disasters. The companies will share resources such as business facilities, storage sites, accommodation, and refueling stations to expedite recovery efforts.
By pooling their assets, the carriers intend to restore network connectivity quickly in disaster-affected areas. This collaboration is particularly crucial for maintaining communication in critical locations like hospitals and municipal facilities, which may be impacted by infrastructure disruptions.
The mobile operators will also work together to assess the damage and identify problems in the network. Sharing information about network conditions will help speed up recovery and address issues more efficiently in the aftermath of a disaster.
Given Japan’s vulnerability to natural disasters like earthquakes, which have previously caused severe damage and disrupted infrastructure, this new framework aims to strengthen the resilience of the country’s mobile communication networks during emergencies.
