South Korea and Japan to Hold High-Level Economic Talks Amid Yoon’s Impeachment

South Korea and Japan will hold high-level economic talks this week to strengthen cooperation and prepare for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The 16th South Korea-Japan economic dialogue will be held in Tokyo, led by South Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hee-sang and Japan’s Takeshi Akahori.

The talks will review current economic cooperation between the two countries. A South Korean official expressed hope that the discussions would help further develop their relationship in a future-oriented way.

The agenda will cover international economic issues, ongoing bilateral cooperation, and ways to expand their partnership as they approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic normalization in 2025.

This dialogue also underscores South Korea’s commitment to maintaining international credibility and strengthening ties with major countries despite its domestic challenges.

Recently, the South Korean National Assembly impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his controversial martial law decision. The impeachment motion passed with 204 votes in favor. Investigations are ongoing, and the court has 180 days to decide whether to uphold or dismiss the impeachment.
