Toyota Tsusho switches on 75-MW biomass-fired power plant in Japan

Japanese trading company Toyota Tsusho Corp (TYO:8015) announced today it commenced the commercial operation of a 75-MW biomass-fired power plant in Kumamoto Prefecture on Sunday.

Named Yatsushiro Biomass Power Plant, the facility is controlled by Kumamoto Forest Generation LLC, a joint investment between Toyota Tsusho’s Ene-Vision Co Ltd and utilities Chubu Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9502) and Toho Gas Co Ltd (TYO:9533).

Yatsushiro will use wood pellets and wood chips, unused thinned wood from the prefecture, as its main fuel.

Overall, the wood-burning biomass power plant should be capable of producing approximately 480 million kWh per year, enough to meet the annual demand of 150,000 local households.
