The Japanese consul general in Portland, a city in the western US state of Oregon, was attacked by a woman in the city’s downtown area last month.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry says that on June 17, Consul General Yoshioka Yuzo suffered a cut to his head after being pushed to the ground by a stranger and hitting the pavement.
US media reported that police arrested 23-year-old Arissa Robinson and charged her with a bias crime and assault.
Media reports said court records show that the suspect had attacked people of Asian descent before.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry issued a notice on June 21 about the incident, urging Japanese nationals in the city to be on alert for similar attacks.
